Hello fellow earthlings :) Welcome to my personal website.

My name is Mikołaj Karawacki and I am a PhD student at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland.

Work

My area of interest & research is exoplanet characterization through transmission spectroscopy of their atmospheres.

Currenty, I'm working on Markov Chain Monte Carlo modelling of binary star / star-planet systems in the Pennsylvania-Toruń Planet Search project.

Outreach

Schools

  • In November of 2019, I co-hosted demonstration shows at the 1st Elementary School in Toruń outlining the dynamics and other physical concepts & principles of robot movement and control.
    Up until the winter break of 2019/2020 I also co-organized a robotics/computer science student club there which gave me lots of opportunities to challenge myself and the pupils with explaining & solving some real-life problems like e.g. how to build and program a robot to navigate a maze.

  • On December 7th 2019 I gave a workshop/talk for primary and secondary school teachers during the XII Seminarium Komputer w Szkolnym Laboratorium Przyrodniczym semiar, concerning the many benefits and capabilities of the Arduino platform for multidisciplinary project-based education in primary and secondary schools.

Informal education

From December of 2014 until June of 2018, I conducted 4 series of robotics workshops at the Municipal Library in Piekary Śląskie for children and teenagers. As we were using LEGO Mindstorms EV3 and later Arduino, the enormity of interest and demand on the side of both the children and their parents was staggering.

University/University-based Space Science team projects

  • In 2016-2017, during my time as a member of University of Silesia didactics of robotics team, Unibot, I put forward a proposition to teach the high-school students participating in the Youth University via a multidisciplinary STEM project: a stratospheric balloon mission. After gaining acceptance and funding, the project was launched with me responsible for conducting seminars and workshops for the participants as wall as for the technical aspects of the mission.

  • Since October/November 2019, I am the leader of a Nicolaus Copernicus University student team designing and building a stratospheric sample return mission. Our goal is to learn atmospheric science, engineering, CAD design, electronics and low-level programming while building a stratospheric balloon gondola equipped with aerogel tablets as well as with optical dust sensor.

    Despite the pandemic, in October 2020 our team has been expanded with a rocketry group.
